April 9th, 2014. I wrote a column about J. Allen Hawkins Community Park and it’s swimming pool. April 23rd, 2014 our Managing Editor, Jean Flanagan wrote a front page story entitled “Wardensville Pool Opening Murky”. Since our writing I’ve thought a bunch about the situation.
Let’s build a new swimming pool for Wardensville. One we have now at Community Park has to be pushing forty years old. I haven’t seen it, but stories/rumors I’ve heard suggest it’s getting pretty worn and somewhat dilapidated. Old pool might be akin to an old car. If you have to replace fuel pump, transmission all four brakes plus body work and a paint job to bring it up to snuff, it’s time to consider buying a new one.
A new pool, but a different place to park it. I know of nothing that says Wardensville’s swimming pool has to be in the community park. Sure, present pool was built with government help which specified money must be used for recreational purposes, but as far as I could see nothing was said that the present location had to remain a pool. Maybe a skating rink or a paddleball court or a…, but it didn’t have to remain a pool.
A new pool, but a different park for it. My suggestion? Why don’t we replace the old Wardensville School VoAg/lunch room with a new pool? Terribly dilapidated old building can be replaced by new pool.
