I know it’s only been a year since I wrote about Jeff Kerr and his Shell station on State Route 55 East of Wardensville. I checked my files and found July 25, 2012 was last time. That’s when I blasted Obama for his campaign speech when he said “If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” I used that line to illustrate how out of touch Obama was with true American values.
Have you been by Jeff’s lately? He’s at it again already.
This past weekend I stopped several times. First time was for hummingbird feed. I got to shooting the bull with Jeff and forgot what else I’d come for. A couple hours later I remembered toilet paper and eggs, so I went back for them.
The whole place is a mess. Reorganization. New construction. Who knows what’s going on? Trusses, facade, new attached building behind. I couldn’t resist the question. “What’s going on?” His answer, “shrug, grin, head shake.” It felt good to be first to know. It took a Kerr family conference to figure out where I might find my hummingbirds some supper in all the messy rearrangement.
Next trip, for the toilet paper, eggs and an impulse buy chocolate candy bar, I found new faces. Two or three folks apparently working in both groceries and hardware, who I couldn’t remember seeing before. Employment on the rise in Capon Valley.
In last week’s Unbased Opinion, I admitted to reading the Wall Street Journal. I used a couple of stories I’d read previous week to illustrate thoughts on gun control. Most stories and opinions I read these days talk about America’s economy and suggested prescriptions for curing what apparently ails it. Almost every time I read such material. I think of Jeff Kerr…
