Following a burst of activity and discussion, plans for Hardy County Courthouse construction/renovation seem to be on hold. Other than mentions of security entrances with guards and detectors, for our court systems, I’ve heard little. OK, so here are my thoughts on what should happen.
Let’s move over into the J. Winston Teets parking lot diagonally across Elm Street from present courthouse and build a one story parking garage. That garage will preserve a fair number of current parking spaces. In this day and age of one person equals one vehicle, it takes lots of spaces for working staff and visiting public. Still more parking area will need to be acquired in future as more public demand for services rises and land becomes available.
Atop that parking garage which will also serve as flood protection for public records, let’s build offices. Down one side, arranged much as they are now in present courthouse, let’s have the Hardy County Clerk and the Assessor. We’ll need good strong underpinning to support all the paper records those offices generate and store from past years, but architects/engineers should be able to give us that capacity.
Across the long center hall I’d like space for Hardy County Commission. Not just a little meeting area as they have now, but a large hall/meeting room with moveable partitions. Adjustable space available for meetings and hearings for such groups as Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Clerk’s Poll Workers informational meetings and any groups which provide public services with public money. Three small chunks of office space should be set aside. One for Planning Commission and one for Sheriff’s use as a tax collection office and one for County Coordinator…
