Moorefield Examiner –
Moorefield Tennis returns nine players from last year’s Region II Class AA/A Tournament and improvements have been made to make a volley toward the state tournament in Charleston.
The Yellow Jackets have proven they know how to serve and defend the net.
Moorefield’s returning players who participated in the Region II Tournament are: Jared Beard, Jeuri Sanchez, Jacob Bowman, Jacob Fisher, Mason Hedrick, Rebecca Merrill, Kylie Hildebrant, Keri Rexrode, and Mallory Sisler.
Sanchez, a senior, was the third seed last year and with diligent work has taken over the top seed this season.
Sanchez defeated Liberty’s Jason Morris 8-4 at regionals, then lost to Bridgeport’s Bryce Williams 8-0.
Beard, a senior, was the top-seed last year and moves to the second seed spot to start the year.
Beard lost to Cam Hornor of Bridgeport 8-0 at regionals last year and lost in top-seed doubles along with Brandon Champ 8-1.
Bowman, a sophomore, lost to Petersburg’s Jacob Kimble 8-4 in the first round of fourth seeded regionals last year and lost in #2 doubles to Berkeley Springs with Sanchez.
Bowman moves up to the third seed for singles this year and will join Sanchez in the top seeded doubles.
Fisher, a senior, played in third seeded doubles with Mason Hedrick last year and lost 8-5 to Grafton at regionals, but after hard off-season preparation this pair will be the second seeded doubles squad.
Fisher will take the fourth seeded singles spot to begin the year.
Hedrick, a senior, returns as the #2 doubles partner with Fisher.
Fisher and Hedrick played tremendously at the net last season and their play has become stronger.
The third seeded doubles will be senior Dillon Ruddle and freshman Patrick Pearce or sophomore Braxton Cook.
