The Moorefield Examiner has been owned by the same
family since 1902 when Samuel Alexander McCoy
purchased the paper from his partner, G. W. McCauley.
Following his death in 1935, Mr. Sam’s daughter
Katherine and her husband, Ralph E Fisher, became the
second generation of publishers. In 1969, their
daughter, Phoebe, returned to run the paper with her
mother. Phoebe and her husband, David O. Heishman,
continue running The Examiner today. They have been
joined by the fourth generation, their son James.

Hardy County’s only locally owned and operated
newspaper is published every Wednesday by the family
corporation, the R. E. Fisher Company, Inc. It is
located at 132 South Main Street, Moorefield.

The Examiner has a tradition as an award winning
editorial page which continues today. It is the only
paper which cares about the people and events
affecting Hardy County. As the county grows, The
Examiner hopes to grow with it and continue providing
news, commentary and information for its readers.
Right now the total paid circulation is 4,800 with
3,300 distributed in Hardy County.

A sister publication, The Weekender: Hardy-Pendleton
Edition, is a Total Market Coverage shopper, delivered
free to all postal patrons, is part of a five-county
network of TMC shoppers published every Saturday. It
is delivered to every address, residential and
business, in Hardy County and a portion of Pendleton
County, WV. There is a total circulation of 8,789. The
five county network has full circulation of 35,000.
Moorefield is the county seat of Hardy County. The
population of the county is about 14,000 and growing.
Basically an agricultural area, Hardy County also has
the fastest growing number of industrial jobs due to
the expansion of Pilgrim’s Pride and American Woodmark.
Unemployment is among the lowest in the state.

Located in the heart of the Potomac Highlands, Hardy
County is central to Cumberland, MD, Winchester and
Harrisonburg, VA, and Elkins, WV. Corridor H is now
completed over much of the county and has cut the
drive to Eastern markets significantly. Work is
continuing on that road toward central West Virginia.

Preprints to be inserted must be delivered by 4:00 p.m.
Monday. Weekender advertising can be placed in any
combination of the four editions with single buy order
placed with us. Run of press advertising must be
ordered and all materials furnished prior to
close-of-business Tuesday. Preprint advertising can be
inserted into any combination of ZIP codes within the
network area through a single buy order and delivery
through our office. Orders must be received prior to
Tuesday at noon and preprints must be received by noon
Wednesday on the week they are meant to run.
