Moorefield Examiner –
The Hardy County Board of Education approved contractors for the construction at East Hardy High School.
The board met in regular session on Monday, Dec. 9.
The apparent low bidders were as follows:
•General Trades – Harbel, Inc. of Cumberland, Md. for $7,525,000 plus $38,500 for security glass. Total award $7,563,500.
•Plumbing – W. G. Tomko, Inc. of Findleyville, Pa. for $1,358,500.
•HVAC – Dougherty Company of Charleston, W. Va. for $2,935,000.
•Electrical – S & S Electric of Ridgeley, W. Va. for $2,597,000.
•Fire Suppression – Brewer and Company of Charleston, W. Va. for $326,600
•Food Service Equipment – M. S. Johnston Company or Hagerstown, Md. for $252,000.
Stephen Knight of Construction Managers Howard Shockey & Sons said the contracts would be awarded on Tuesday, Dec. 17. “We will have a kick-off on Thursday, Dec. 19,” he said.
Representatives of the BOE, Williamson Shriver and Howard Shockey and Sons met with the West Virginia School Building Authority last week because all but the General Trades bids were over-budget. The total overage is $359,304.
“We have been given approval by the SBA to go ahead with the base bids,” Knight said. “We have been working on value-engineering items. That is those items that can be substituted for a lower cost, but still maintain the same specifications.”
Knight said any changes in equipment must be approved by the architect.
Knight said their construction supervisor had previously met with the fire marshal. The work on Phase 2 of the EHHS project will necessitate the closing of the northern hallway at EHHS. The fire marshal approved of the closure.
Alternative School Report
Moorefield Middle School Principal Pat McGregor presented an update on the Alternative School, which was moved from the East Hardy Campus to MMS because of construction at East Hardy High School.
Students are sent to the alternative school if, for a number of reasons, it has been determined they would achieve better academically in an alternative classroom setting.
